FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Client: Indiana Humanities Council

Design Team: Courtney Moore, Jahana Bilal, Jessica Morgan, Amanda Parks

Production: The Exhibit House

In an increasingly connected world where grocery stores in Indiana carry mangoes year round, it's easy to forget the delicious bounty produced just down the road. The Indiana Humanities Council created a program called Food for Thought to examine and celebrate the food of Indiana and its place in our lives and won the prestigious Helen and Martin Schwartz Prize in 2011 for their efforts.

I was pleased to contribute to their success by working with a small team of designers on one aspect of the program: the Food for Thought exhibit. The exhibit traveled throughout the state from summer 2010 through winter 2011. The design team highlighted the food of our state by employing some traditional forms of food production: canning jars, the hoosier cabinet, and the silo.

The Jar Wall is a large Indiana-shaped shelving unit featuring the famous Ball jars which highlight local food producers, products, events, and attractions throughout the state.

The Story Silo gives visitors a private space to record a video of a personal food story. Some of these stories and other Food for Thought videos can be found on the Indiana Humanities Council's youtube channel.

The Hoosier Cabinet houses historical cooking tools and a bit of Indiana food history.

The towers are a more modern structure and provide information about Indiana's modern food production environment.
